Bad Girls Stereotypes and Rituals

Both rituals and stereotypes are found in the show “The Bad Girls Club.” Most of these are considered bad, and they are looked at or used in a negative way. Both of these speak with each other. What makes it a ritual also shows how it is a stereotype of the girls.

The rituals in this show are all based around common things that they do on a routine basis that may not be considered a routine. Some of these rituals include going out to bars, fighting, sleeping until noon, ruining other roommates personal belongings, and even eating a 2 AM. I really find these to be rituals because even though they may not mean to do them, every season, they happen. Drinking, sleeping in, and destroying property is the tell-tell sign that you are dealing with a bad girl, these are also the typical stereotypes relating to a “bad girl.”

Other rituals like sleeping in really late and staying up really late (especially to eat) are also typical stereotypes of a bad girl. These correlate with the previous ritual of partying because when a girl stays out late partying, she stays up late, and when someone stays up late, they tend to sleep in longer.

Although all of these are stereotypes of a bad girl, they are stereotypes for a reason. They are based off of one type of “bad girl” and they are leaving out other types. You can consider a bad girl to be a girl that has herself together and who stands up for the rights and changes for all women. I would consider a bad girl to be a feminist because they battle for all of the right reasons. This just goes to show how the media wants to portray a bad girl and how they want to get their ratings.

Icon Analysis

The three icon's I am choosing are: Beyonce, Spongebob Squarepants, and Maci Bookout. Each of these play a particular role in my current life and they also show difference sides of pop culture.

Beyonce is a musical artist and an actress that portrays the respectful and professional side of the media. She is a great role model on how to behave and act and treat other people. She portrays the type of music that I love to listen to and come on, her vocals... amazing!

Spongebob Squarepants is a cartoon show that plays on Nickelodeon and has been around for a long time. This show is pretty much my life, all because of my beautiful daughter who loves it more than anything. This show is a huge part of pop culture because it has been around for so long and impact many children.

Maci Bookout is a reality TV star that first came out on 16 and Pregnant and then on Teen Mom. She is the picture of today's reality TV and what pop culture is slowly turning into. Pop culture is forming around the lives of today's teens and the struggles they go through. Maci and I are similar because I was a teen mom myself. We have faced some of the same struggles and dealt with similar problems.

What does Pop Culture Mean?

When I think of pop culture, the first thing I think about is music. Now, I don't know if that is because of the word "pop" and linking that to the genre of pop, or what, but in whole, I think of music. All together, I think of pop culture as modern media. This can be in the form of music, or books, or movies/television; everything modern that relates to the media is how I look at pop culture

I think understand pop culture is important in any career because of how relevant it is. The media uses technology for everything these days, with the internet booming and the use of search engines and all. This will effect anyone no matter what job path they choose. I think that pop culture has a positive impact on the business world and can show you what helpful things you can do and also the things you shouldn't.

My pop culture artifact is the emblem of MTV. I think MTV is what I really think about when it comes to pop culture. It is a mix of music and TV and media all combined into one.
